Earlier this season I posed the question “Has the four toed statue mystery been solved?“. Although many Lost fans thought the statue was Anubis, I thought it might be Taweret. Taweret was the Egyptian goddess of fertility and the episode that particular week was about Juliet’s effort in bringing a baby to a successful delivery on the island.
Well for our finale the story this time is about Jacob, who just so happens to “live” under the shadow of the statue (which is now just a four toed foot). In the episode Jacob says he nudges people along, ostensibly to get them where they need to be in life and/or to return them to their rightful place.
Also we finally get to see the face of the statue in this episode. It looks to me like a crocodile. The egyptian god of the crocodile is Sobek.
Quoting from Wikipedia (the free online encyclopedia):
Sobek’s ambiguous nature led some Egyptians to believe that he was a repairer of evil that had been done, rather than a force for good in itself, for example, going to Duat to restore damage done to the dead as a result of their form of death. He was also said to call on suitable gods and goddesses required for protecting people in situation, effectively having a more distant role, nudging things along, rather than taking an active part.
Not only have we solved (I think) the statue mystery, we also can describe Jacob pretty well from this description of Sobek. Here are some comparison photos:
Crocodile face (Sobek)+Taweret body/head = 4 Toed Statue
